A roof for tomorrow, Manta

In northwest Benin, in the Commune of Boukombe, villages are often far from each other, connected by difficult roads and lacking essential services. In many of these communities, there are no easily accessible secondary schools or training centers. For many families, meeting the costs of food, housing, and education away from the village is simply impossible. In this context, young women are among the most disadvantaged. Early schooling is common, and, in the absence of alternatives, many girls are forced into early marriage, informal employment, or are excluded from real opportunities for personal and professional growth. From this reality, "A Roof for Tomorrow" was born, a project that stems from a simple and concrete need: to offer girls a safe place to live so they can study or train, without allowing distance or economic hardship to become an insurmountable obstacle. In Manta, strategically located near schools and training centers, ANAN has rented a house to accommodate young people from neighboring villages. Here, the beneficiaries find a shared, dignified, and protected environment, where food, lodging, and basic necessities are guaranteed. The project goes beyond reception. Each girl is supported in an educational or vocational program, with placement in secondary schools or training workshops such as tailoring, hairdressing, and other craft activities. All school and training expenses,registrations, materials, uniforms,are covered by the project, completely easing the financial burden on families. The home is supervised daily by a local staff member, responsible for managing the spaces, organizing meals, ensuring the girls' physical and emotional well-being, and ensuring compliance with the rules of coexistence. Constant communication with ANAN ensures attentive and ongoing support.

Beneficiaries are selected in collaboration with families and local authorities, and a personalized educational program is developed for each. Over time, school attendance, progress, and personal growth are monitored, using an approach based on listening, empowerment, and respect.

In the short term, the project allows girls to be regularly enrolled in educational or professional programs, reducing the risk of dropout and marginalization. In the medium and long term, it helps improve their employment prospects, raise awareness of the value of female education within families, and build a model that can be replicated in other villages in the area.

The impact extends beyond individual beneficiaries. Promoting access to education and training means contributing to strengthening the role of women in the community, developing local professional skills, and combating intergenerational poverty. Above all, it means creating the conditions for these young women to become, over time, protagonists of change in their native contexts.
